The site was originally a textile village established in 1831, later purchased and renamed Smithville in 1865 by Hezekiah Bradley Smith, who relocated his woodworking machine company there. The park offers visitors hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, and picnicking, with features like the Smithville Mansion, a Visitor's Center, museums, and picnic areas. The park also preserves the history of town planning, sustainability, and workers' welfare from its industrial past.
