In 1979, Judge Macauley L. Smith and his wife, Emilie Strong Smith, gifted the Blackacre homestead for the benefit of Kentucky's citizens. This led to the establishment of Kentucky’s first State Nature Preserve, which has since inspired countless students, teachers, and volunteers through its environmental programs. The 300-acre Blackacre Conservancy, home to a historic homestead from 1792 and designated a National Historic Rural Settlement, invites visitors to explore trails, historic structures, and farm animals, preserving the rich heritage of Kentucky.
