Details:
Jun 27–Oct 4, 2026 Since being awarded the Contemporary’s Berlin Residency in 2023 Rubio has revisited his origins as an artist working in mixed media drawing with graphite and color pencil. His current bodies of work explore themes of barrio culture, folklore and mythology, Catholic iconography, and community landmarks. This exhibition will include Rubio’s low riders series, taking city and neighborhood vehicles like mail trucks, taco trucks and other vehicles distinctive to place and applying the low rider aesthetic to them. It will also include a selection of his Mexican American Folklore drawings, and early works that illustrate thematic and process oriented through lines in his practice. The exhibition is a celebration of San Antonio’s Chicano community, tradition, and culture, and is rich with symbolism and local iconography.
