Details:
Join naturalist Simone Lord for a guided Butterfly Walk in the stunning Water Canyon, where you'll have the chance to slow down, observe, and learn about local butterfly species and their habitats. The adventure begins at 8:45 AM at the Los Alamos Nature Center, where participants will caravan to the trailhead. Weather permitting, enjoy both on- and off-trail exploration, immersing yourself in the fascinating world of local pollinators.
Participants are encouraged to bring water, lunch, snacks, sturdy walking shoes, and rain gear (as it’s monsoon season), along with binoculars and cameras for a better view. An insect net is optional. The hike is generally easy but may feature some uneven and loose terrain, so light off-trail walking is to be expected.
Simone Lord, an ecologist passionate about wildlife conservation, will lead the walk. With a background in studying wildlife and pollinator-plant interactions, she has a particular affinity for butterflies. Originally from Iowa, Simone moved to New Mexico in 2022 and enjoys the southwestern landscapes, along with hobbies like snowboarding, hiking, reading, and crocheting. Admission is free.
