Diabetes can be controlled and the progression of complications delayed with an individual treatment program that includes diet, exercise, and/or medication. Diabetes classes offered at Decatur County Memorial Hospital are designed to teach individuals with diabetes and their families more about the disease and how to implement lifestyle changes to avoid complications. Sessions, led by a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) Pharmacist, follow curriculum standards of the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES) Diabetes Education Accreditation Program (DEAP). Topics include an overview of diabetes, healthy eating (meal planning, portion control, food groups, restaurant eating, carbohydrate counting), the role of exercise, available medications, blood glucose testing, risk reduction for complications, and problem-solving/goal-setting. Each session consists of three two-hour classes and registration is required. Classes are usually covered by most insurance. For more information or to register, call 812-663-1341.
