Details:
With two degrees from NYU, Alex Minasian has established himself—at a remarkably young age—as a versatile pianist, educator, and impresario working across a wide range of musical genres.
As a pianist, Alex studied with some of the most revered figures in jazz history, including Hank Jones, Don Friedman, Jean-Michel Pilc, and James Williams. He has performed in many of the country’s most iconic venues, including Birdland, Blue Note, Café Carlyle, Yoshi's, Bohemian Caverns, Iridium, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Village Vanguard, and the Apollo Theater.
He has shared the stage with legendary artists such as James Ingram, Arturo Sandoval, Questlove, Sam Moore, Marilyn McCoo, Curtis Fuller, Clark Terry, and alongside jazz greats including Brian Lynch, Annie Ross, Billy Pierce, Sheila Jordan, Eric Alexander, and Hugh Masekela.
Alex was the last pianist for the late iconic singer and NEA Jazz Master Little Jimmy Scott, and has served as pianist and musical director for the renowned vocalist Mark Murphy. He also performs as pianist and musical director for singer, actor, songwriter, and historian Billy Vera and his 18-piece big band.
As a bandleader, Alex has appeared at major international festivals, including the Rochester International Jazz Festival, where he performed as co-leader of a trio with bassist Brandi Disterheft. In 2013, Minasian, Disterheft, and veteran drummer Steve Williams (known for his work with Shirley Horn) formed the Hanky Panky Trio in honor of Hank Jones. The trio was featured in Season 2 of the hit Netflix series Orange Is the New Black and has performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival with Sheila Jordan, as well as at the Istanbul Jazz Festival.
Currently, Alex tours with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group Little Anthony and the Imperials and soul legend Candi Staton. He is also a regular presence on the New York jazz scene, performing with many of today’s leading musicians, including Joe Farnsworth, Kenny Washington, Peter Washington, Craig Handy, Ron Blake, and Steve Wilson, among others.
Alex has also been featured in Yerevan Magazine, a Los Angeles–based publication dedicated to Armenian news and culture...
