Details:
Celebrate Virginia State Parks History & Culture Weekend with a journey through time at James River State Park. This guided, moderate two-mile out-and-back hike explores the stories, landscapes, and milestones that shaped the park and the surrounding region, from ancient fossils beneath your feet to the strategic role the area played during the American Civil War. Along the way, we’ll pause at one of the park’s historic cemeteries and learn about the families, communities, and cultural resources connected to this land. The hike concludes with sweeping views from the Tye River Overlook, offering a striking reminder of how the park’s natural beauty and rich history come together across the landscape. Join us as we bring the past to life and highlight the people, places, and events that helped shape James River State Park into the treasured site it is today. Please meet at the Visitor Center. Suitable for all ages. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the weather and bring a water bottle with you. Parks are for everyone, please let us know if you need special accommodation. For more information, please call (434) 933-8527 or email Tess. Himelspach@dcr.virginia.gov. Know Before You Go: Before your visit, find the most up to date health and safety information here.
