Loyal Americans: The Story of Eden Area Japanese Americans During World War II

This special exhibit will be on display on the first floor of the Fremont Main Library from August 2 to August 31. Loyal Americans: The Story of Eden Area Japanese Americans During World War II Relocation. Evacuation. Internment. Imprisonment. Incarceration. These are all words used to describe the forced removal of Japanese and Japanese Americans from the West Coast at the start of World War II. The stories of those that lived through this period are more relevant today than ever, while we as a society still grapple with issues of immigration, race, and discrimination. With a focus on the stories of Eden Area Japanese American families who were relocated from the Watkins Street site in Hayward, this exhibit explores what local pre-war life was like and how that life changed following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and Executive Order 9066, leaving home, camp life, the question of loyalty and court cases, returning home and the fight for redress.
