The Wood Memorial Library & Museum, originally built in 1926 as a public library, now operates as a privately funded institution managed by the Friends of Wood Memorial Library & Museum. Its mission is to "make history, nature and the arts come alive" with a focus on the history of South Windsor and the central Connecticut River Valley. The institution serves as a cultural center offering educational programming, particularly for third graders on Native American history and local town history. It houses extensive archives and databases of community documents, photographs, and oral histories, alongside town archives. Permanent exhibits feature natural history, local birds, Native American artifacts, and early American furniture. The Wood also hosts live concerts, art exhibitions, historical presentations, children's story times, and workshops. Additionally, it operates Nowashe Village, an outdoor museum of Indigenous life, and is involved in preserving historic properties like the Vibert House and Barn. The Wood Memorial Library and Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
