Details:
Join us on June 30, 2026, at the Kendall Planetarium for "Sayaka Ganz: Sculpting Motion from Plastic" featuring the acclaimed sculptor and creator of *Sayaka Ganz: Reclaimed Creations*. The event begins with an exclusive Meet & Greet with Sayaka from 5:00 to 6:00 PM in the Empirical Theater Lobby, followed by the main lecture at 6:30 PM. Sayaka will delve into her artistic process of transforming everyday discarded plastics—such as utensils, hangers, and toys—into stunning large-scale animal sculptures that seem to convey motion, whether running, flying, or swimming.
She'll share insights into her creative journey, including her method of collecting materials, constructing a metal armature, and assembling vibrant plastic pieces to evoke the illusion of movement. Sayaka will also reflect on how her Japanese upbringing, which fosters a deep respect for nature and the spirit in objects, influences her art, encouraging us all to reconsider the value of what we often deem waste.
Tickets are available on a sliding scale for the lecture, starting from $0 to $15 (with a suggested donation of $8), while the Meet & Greet is priced at $30 per person, offering a 15% discount for OMSI members. This presentation promises to inspire audiences of all ages to reimagine plastic and appreciate creative efforts towards ocean and wildlife conservation. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the exhibit, which will be on display from July 1 to September 20, 2026.
