Celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary by traveling back in time for Independence Day weekend at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park! Visitors will be able to glimpse the holiday activities that would have taken place at this 1820s era outpost.
Ongoing demonstrations featuring military and civilian life will occur throughout the park. Reenactors portray fur traders, coopers, blacksmiths, carpenters, tinsmiths, weavers and other period trades. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the reenactors.
Schedule
10 a.m. – The Troop (Roll call, inspection, raise colours, and morning gun)
10:15 a.m. – History Trailer (west gate, ongoing); Company Drill (flag pole, ongoing)
10:30 a.m., Saturday only – “Legacies of the American Revolution” by retired history professor and award-winning author, Dr. Don Hickey (Visitor Center)
10:30 a.m., Sunday only – Church at the North Barrack
11 a.m. – Speeches and toast by Col. Leavenworth (Sutler Store)
Noon – Officer’s Mess (West Barrack)
12:15 p.m. – Ice Cream/Cobbler Social (near Council House)
1:15 p.m. – Salute to the States & reading of the Declaration of Independence (Flag Pole)
1:30 p.m. – “What happened to the signers?” presentation (Flag Pole)
3 p.m. – Regimental Colors (Flag Pole)
3:30 p.m. – Whiskey Ration (West Barrack)
4 p.m. – The Retreat (Roll call, Inspection, Evening gun)
Flag is lowered; Call in sentries–cease all challenging. End of publik
hours.
Gun will be fired at 10 a.m., noon & 4 p.m. (at least).

-Adults (13 & up): $5
-Children 3-12: $1
-2 and under: Free
A valid Nebraska Park Entry Permit is required for all vehicles to enter the park and can be purchased at the site.
