The Chadakoin Valley Project is partnering with the Fenton History Center. This project is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich yet underrepresented history of the Black community in Jamestown, New York. For generations, Black residents have made significant contributions to the city’s cultural, social, and civic life. Yet, their stories and experiences remain largely unexplored in the broader historical narrative. Our mission is to document and celebrate these contributions through the collection of oral histories, preservation of historical sites, and exploration of cultural practices that highlight the significance of Black heritage in our city.
Black history is deeply rooted in oral tradition—stories passed down through generations that capture not just facts, but the lived emotions, struggles, and triumphs of the community. These narratives offer unique insights often missing from traditional records. Engaging directly with community members to listen and document these stories is essential. They form a living archive of Black resilience, creativity, and legacy that must be preserved before it fades from memory.
Our Mission
Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future – We are committed to preserving Black history by sharing stories, artifacts, and achievements that honor the legacy of those who came before us and inspire future generations.
Keeping Voices Alive – Through education, advocacy, and cultural preservation, we ensure that the voices, struggles, and triumphs of Black communities remain a vital part of history.
Empowering Through Knowledge – By documenting, teaching, and celebrating Black history, we empower individuals to understand their heritage and shape a more inclusive future.
Protecting Our Legacy – We safeguard Black history by preserving archives, supporting historical landmarks, and promoting awareness to ensure that these contributions are never forgotten.
Why Funding Matters
This funding is vital to the continuation and expansion of our work. It will empower us to deepen community engagement, broaden our research, and capture critical narratives that might otherwise be lost. With this support, we will be able to:
Conduct and record oral history interviews
Identify and document historical sites significant to the Black community
Collect archival materials and firsthand accounts
Create educational resources and public programming to share these histories
