Discover Henna: Tradition, Culture & Design

Join us this July as we celebrate South Asian Heritage Month through the timeless art of henna. Deeply rooted in traditions across India, Pakistan, and neighboring regions, henna (mehendi) has been used for centuries to adorn the body during festivals, weddings, and moments of joy—blending artistry with cultural expression. This beginner-friendly workshop, led by Smriti Sangal from Culture Chauraha, offers a welcoming space to explore this beautiful practice. We’ll begin with a brief introduction to the history and significance of henna, followed by guided practice of simple patterns and motifs. You’ll then have the opportunity to create your own designs—either on your hands or on paper, depending on your comfort. All materials are provided, including ready-to-use henna cones. The henna used is natural, chemical-free, and safe for skin application. Whether you're discovering henna for the first time or reconnecting with a familiar tradition, this session is designed to be relaxing, creative, and meaningful—a celebration of heritage, one design at a time. This workshop is open to Livingston Library cardholders 18 and up with registration only. Space is limited.
