Details:
In the modern world, we often find ourselves confined to flat surfaces, ergonomic chairs, and repetitive motions that leave our bodies feeling stiff and disconnected. This workshop invites you to step off the pavement and back into your "biological home."
Designed specifically for the Driftless Folk School community, this course bridges the gap between functional fitness and ancestral living. You will learn to move through the landscape with the grace and efficiency of our ancestors, rediscovering the inherent strength already within you.
What You Will Learn
We will break down the fundamental movement skills necessary for a playful, resilient, "helpful" life:
- Ground-Based Transitions: Mastering the art of getting up and down from the earth with ease—essential for gardening, foraging, and floor-based living.
- Locomotion & Balance: Navigating uneven terrain, logs, and slopes using natural gaits that protect your joints and build core stability.
- Practical Manipulatives: The mechanics of lifting, carrying, throwing, and catching natural objects (logs, stones) to build functional, real-world strength.
- Climbing & Vaulting: Safely overcoming obstacles using techniques that emphasize ""be strong to be helpful.""
- Play: Because it keeps us young
Why This Matters
This isn't just a workout; it's a re-sensitization to the world around you. By training barefoot or in minimal footwear, we re-establish a sensory connection to the soil and improve our proprioception (the body's ability to perceive its own position, movement, and spatial orientation without using vision). Whether you are a homesteader looking to move more safely on the farm, a parent wanting to keep up with your children in the woods, or a craftsperson seeking to undo the "hunch" of the workbench, these skills are the foundation of lifelong physical freedom.
No prior fitness experience is necessary. We scale every movement to your current ability level, focusing on safety and the "play" of movement.
Join us to reclaim your natural heritage and move through the obstacles of life with newfound confidence and capability.
