Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) provides unique performance capabilities and has the potential for enabling trips to Mars in under 90 days. Dr. Myers will cover this topic in depth, including an overview of Mars mission requirements and constraints, and progress on NASA’s Space Reactor 1 (SR-1) Freedom mission to Mars that is scheduled to launch in 2028.
Myers will present the key elements and capabilities of NEP vehicles including the reactor, shielding, power conversion system, electric propulsion system, and heat rejection systems, as well the development roadmap and required technology advances to achieve fast trips to Mars.
