Details:
History will come alive through hands-on activities for all ages, live performances, historical portrayals and exhibits during the kickoff event for the America 250 Celebration in Edwardsville. Check out all the details at: www.cityofedwardsville.com/america250
Interact with Voices from History:
Reenactors and docents will share the words and perspectives of various groups of people, including Abigail Adams and Benjamin Franklin, about the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence.
A Reading of the Declaration of Independence:
Hear what America 250 is celebrating with a reading of the Declaration of Independence by the Alumni Players! About a dozen performers will imbue the words of this founding document with the passion with which it was written.
Calling John Hancock:
Sign a supersized replica of the Declaration of Independence. Educational exhibits will offer historic viewpoints of various advocates for American independence. Community groups will share information, children's activities and handouts, including a special hand-held America 250 flag.
Decorate a Community Birthday Cake for America:
The Edwardsville Public Library and Edwardsville Children's Museum are collaborating on a giant, moveable crafted creation that the community (children, especially!) can help decorate in City Park. Once completed, the cake will be on public display before being transported to the Edwardsville American Legion Post 199 for the Saturday, July 4, festival and fireworks.
Musical Performances:
The Great Rivers Choral Society will perform a series of patriotic songs, followed by old-time string band music from St. Louis-area favorites the Mound City Slickers. Come back to City Park on Sunday night, as the Edwardsville Symphony will host its regularly scheduled concert there at 7 p.m.
