Details:
Join us for the NEA Big Read - Film & Media Camp: Storytelling Through the Lens, taking place from June 8 to June 20, 2026. This two-week immersive camp, hosted by the local media education nonprofit El Raton Media Works (ERMW), invites youth and adults to craft inspirational visual stories inspired by the themes of Mary Roach's bestselling book, *Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law*. Participants will delve into how stories transition from page to screen, learning essential skills in writing, directing, filming, and producing original short films that explore wildlife coexistence and human-nature conflict.
Throughout the camp, attendees will develop scripts, master camera, lighting, and sound techniques, collaborate as cast and crew, and edit their films into polished projects. They will also experiment with various formats, including narrative, documentary, experimental film, and 360° VR storytelling. No prior filmmaking experience is required, making this camp a supportive environment for anyone looking to explore their creativity.
The camp will culminate in a showcase of the completed films during the NEA Big Read Closing Celebration at the historic Shuler Theater on June 27, 2026. Beyond just a camp, this program offers a creative launchpad for storytelling, science, and coexistence in our community. Registration is free but required, and space is limited. Join us in this exciting exploration of narrative and nature—everyone is welcome!
