Details:
When president-elect Abraham Lincoln traveled from Illinois to Washington on his inaugural journey, he met and spoke to most of his new constituents for the first time. His speeches before the NJ Senate and the NJ Assembly were considered by many to be the two most powerful of his trip, evoking the spirit of George Washington and his army crossing the Delaware, their battle with the Hessians and the hardships they endured. He then continued on in the same spirit in Philadelphia, evoking the Declaration of Independence at Independence Hall itself. This talk will address the following question: In this year of our 250th anniversary of American independence, how did Lincoln make use of our revolutionary heritage to advance the cause of the Union?
