Experience the Old State Capitol after hours with self-guided tours and two engaging 20-minute programs that illuminate Illinois' past.
5:30 PM: Custodian of Freedom: William H. Butler's Capitol Story introduces visitors to an African American capitol caretaker who also served as an Underground Railroad station master and a delegate to Illinois' first Colored Citizens Convention - his life reflecting the courage and resilience of Springfield's Black community.
6:30 PM: Frederick Douglass, Abolitionist & Orator - One of America's greatest voices for freedom returns to life, recounting his visit to Springfield one year after Lincoln's assassination, sharing his powerful message of equality and national healing.
Programs are free and open to everyone; no reservations are needed. The Old State Capitol will remain open until 7:00 PM on the evenings these programs are offered.
