Details:
Each Tuesday in June, July, and August, the volunteer reenactors of the 114th Illinois Infantry Regiment will host a flag lowering ceremony at the Lincoln Tomb. Portraying Civil War soldiers, they will perform a musical tribute and gun salute to President Abraham Lincoln, demonstrate marching drills and inspections from the Civil War era, and conduct a ceremony to lower the flag that flies over the Lincoln Tomb. The volunteers of the Springfield Soldier's Aid Society will host a drawing that families in attendance are welcome to enter as they arrive; the family whose name is selected in the drawing will receive the flag that has flown over the Lincoln Tomb the preceding week to take home.
Those sensitive to loud noises should note that this program includes firing of Civil War-era rifles, and may also include firing a small mortar.
This event is free and open to the public; guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Guests will be directed to a safe viewing area to watch the ceremony.
