Details:
Join us for some of the best birding in SE Michigan at Pointe Mouillee!
Join Detroit Bird Alliance expert and eagle-eyed leaders, Jim Bull and Bruce Szczechowski, on a 4 - 6 mile hike on the dikes at Pointe Mouillee State Game Area, a birding hotspot!
Pointe Mouillee is a significant waterfowl habitat and one of the largest freshwater marsh restoration projects in North America, encompassing 7,483 acres of wetlands and open water. Adding to the magic of Pointe Mouillee is the fact that it lies within the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways bringing numerous migrating species of birds to rest and refuel.
You could see American White Pelicans, Caspian and Forster’s Terns, Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebes, Common Moorhen, Sora and Virginia Rails, American and Least Bitterns, Great Blue Herons, Black-crowned Night Herons, Bald Eagles nesting (up close), Northern Harrier, Swamp Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Marsh Wren, Common Yellowthroats, and if we are lucky we may even see Black-necked Stilts, Wilson’s Phalaropes, and sometimes one or two Yellow-headed Blackbirds. Plus several species of turtles, Northern Water Snakes, Fox Snakes, and a few mammals like the keystone wetland species including muskrats, minks, and even swimming ground hogs may show up. We also will see howy flowers like Rose Mallow and huge beds of American Lotus. Michigan’s symbol of clean water, and a host of butterflies, dragonflies, and other insects.
Meeting Location: We will meet in the Sigler Road parking lot for Pointe Mouillee State Game Area. For navigational purposes, use 8456 Sigler Road, South Rockwood, MI 48179 . The Sigler Road Parking Lot is on Sigler Road, just east of the intersection at US Turnpike Road (also called West Jefferson). The Sigler Road parking lot is the farthest north access point for Pointe Mouillee. There are parking lots farther south--we will not be there!
Please note there are no bathrooms.
After registering, you will receive the Detroit Bird Alliance bi-monthly e-newsletter, Flyway Express.
