Details:
Come by Rochambeau Library between 1:00 and 4:00 on Friday, July 24th, and get your soil tested for free by the URI Master Gardeners!
Bring about 1 cup of dry soil and get it tested for pH and texture.
Soil sampling instructions, for best results:
Determine the area that will be represented by the sample you take -- the physical appearance of the soil, color, drainage, and use (eg lawn, garden) should be similar throughout the area you're testing.
Using a clean bucket and a spade, collect about 1/2 cup of soil from each of several spots within that same area, at least 6 inches down, and mix them together.
Allow the soil to completely dry (usually overnight) on newspaper or a paper plate.
Next, break up any lumps and remove stones, roots, and other debris.
Put about one cup of the dry, mixed soil into a clear plastic or paper bag and label the area it came from.
Bring it in for a free test! Trained URI Master Gardener volunteers will test your soil's pH, evaluate it's texture, and give you a report with recommendations for actions to improve it.
More information about soil testing can be found here on the URI GIST website.
