The Stanford L. Warren Branch Library, a historic institution in Durham, North Carolina, has a rich history dating back to the Durham Colored Library founded in 1916. Initially established to provide access to reading materials for the African American community, it was named in honor of Dr. Stanford Leigh Warren, who donated funds for its current location in 1939. The library became part of the Durham County Library system in 1966. It has served as a vital community center, offering programs for adults and children, and even operating a bookmobile to reach rural areas. The library has undergone several renovations, most recently reopening in December 2024 after extensive upgrades to its interior, furniture, and shelving, while preserving its historical significance. It houses a special collection of rare volumes on African-American culture and history, stemming from an initial donation of 799 books in 1913. The library aims to encourage discovery, connect the community, and lead in literacy, offering modern amenities alongside its historical legacy.
