The National Aviary is America's only independent indoor nonprofit zoo dedicated exclusively to birds. Its mission is to inspire respect for nature through an appreciation of birds. The Aviary is home to over 500 birds representing more than 150 species, many of which are threatened or endangered. It offers immersive, walk-through habitats that allow for intimate, up-close interactions with free-flying birds, including opportunities for hand-feeding and meeting various species. The organization is actively involved in global conservation efforts, contributing to endangered bird breeding programs and working to preserve bird habitats worldwide. Through dynamic education programming, the National Aviary aims to instill a conservation ethic in diverse audiences. They also engage in ecological research, husbandry, and healthcare for birds, and collaborate with organizations like SANCCOB and NAMCOB to support wild penguin populations. Visitors can experience daily interactive activities, such as feedings and bird shows, and special encounters with various species.
