James Monroe's Highland is a historic house museum and public site in Charlottesville, Virginia, that was home to the fifth U.S. President, James Monroe. The site interprets the period of Monroe's public career and the lives of the enslaved African Americans who lived and worked on the property. Owned and operated by William & Mary, Highland offers guided tours, community and private events, and features a museum shop. It also provides recreational opportunities through its rustic trail system and engages in environmental stewardship projects. Highland is committed to exploring and sharing diverse and inclusive narratives of U.S. history, with a focus on the legacies of slavery and reconciliation.
