Program Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) Cello Sonata in D Minor, op. 40 Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat Major, op. 87, B. 162 The Henry J. Bruman Summer Chamber Music Festival is being held this summer in Lani Hall, a 133-seat auditorium located in the Schoenberg Music Building on the UCLA campus. All concerts are free of charge, and no reservations are required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Shostakovich & Dvořák Ambroise Aubrun, violin Virginie d’Avezac, viola Bryant Gozali, cello Zachary Deak, piano Ambroise Aubrun Hailed as a “marvelous violinist” (France Musique) with “sensitive tone” (Pizzicato Magazine) and “tremendous ease, suppleness, and beauty of sound” (Nice-Matin) , violinist Ambroise Aubrun enjoys a career as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician. He has performed extensively on three continents and has conducted master classes in North America (Québec, California, Oregon, New York, Wisconsin, Nevada, Utah, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico) , France, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand. His albums for Editions Hortus and Navona Records have embraced a wide range of repertoire from J. S. Bach to Eric Tanguy (b. 1968) , and received praise of the highest caliber (five stars in Pizzicato Magazine, “coup de coeur” by France Musique, and a nomination for the 2021 International Classical Music Awards) . His performances and albums have been broadcast on CBS, ABC, WFMT Chicago, France Musique, 3MBS Melbourne (Australia) , Klara Radio (Belgium) , KPFK Los Angeles, KNCJ Nevada, WTUL New-Orleans, and KUSC Los Angeles. He has served as guest concertmaster of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico, and is a regular guest of the Los Angeles Philharmonic violin sections. Aubrun graduated at age nineteen from the Paris National Superior Conservatory, and then studied at UCLA (DMA) and at the Colburn Conservatory of Music (Artist Diploma) . He is a winner of the Charles Oulmont Prize of the Fondation de France, a laureate of the Langart Foundation in Switzerland, and a recipient of the UNLV Barrick Scholar Award for outstanding achievement in Creative Activities and a CSUN Faculty Achievement Award. Currently Associate Professor of Violin at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Dr. Aubrun previously taught at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and UC Santa Barbara. He is the artistic director of the Henry J. Bruman Summer Chamber Music Festival at UCLA. Dr. Aubrun plays a Matteo Goffriller violin, on generous loan from the Langart Foundation. Virginie d’Avezac Virginie d’Avezac is a French-American violist celebrated for her dynamic performances across Europe, North Africa, and the United States. She has appeared with leading ensembles such as the National Orchestras of Bordeaux, Radio‑France, Morocco, and Tunis, and has been featured with US groups including the LA Master Chorale, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, New West Symphony, and Santa Monica Symphony. In 2010 she earned a place in the prestigious Proquartet chamber‑music program, where her quartet received mentorship from members of the Alban Berg, Danel, and Prazak quartets. Since relocating to the United States in 2016, Virginie has been a regular guest at festivals like Bruman, Protsman, Mason Concerts, and the Sunday Live series at LACMA, as well as the South Pasadena Public Library concert series. Virginie contributed to Danaë Xanthe Vlasse’s Grammy‑winning album Mythologies (Cezanne Records, 2021) , further cementing her reputation as a versatile and acclaimed artist. She currently serves as Adjunct Faculty at Old Dominion University and directs the Atlantic Voices choir in Norfolk, VA. Bryant Gozali Bryant Gozali is an Indonesian cellist based in Jakarta, serving as Principal Cellist of the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra and as a founding member of the Jakarta Trio. Recognized for his refined sound, disciplined artistry, and versatility, he maintains an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral performer, and educator. Bryant began studying cello at age nine under Professor Su Li at Xiamen University. His early achievements included awards at the Ai Qin Bei National Cello Competition and orchestral leadership roles in Singapore under the mentorship of Hermina Ilano and Chan Tze Law. In 2010, he continued his studies in the United States with Yao Zhao of the San Diego Symphony, later winning the concerto competition at the Great Wall International Music Academy. He earned his Bachelor of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music under Stephen Geber and his Master of Music from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music with Antonio Lysy. Bryant also studied with distinguished pedagogues including Hans Jørgen Jensen, Paul Katz, and Philippe Muller. Alongside performing, he teaches at Universitas Pelita Harapan and founded Little Mendelssohn and Mendelssohn Academy to support cello education in Indonesia. Zachary Deak Pianist Zachary Deak has appeared in recital as a soloist and chamber musician in the United States, France, Morocco, Portugal, Moldova, and the United Kingdom. He has performed at venues including the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, the Cité de la Musique and Salle Cortot in Paris, the Casa da Música in Porto, and the Institut Français in Agadir, Morocco. Recent highlights include a performance of Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Old Dominion University Symphony Orchestra; a performance at the Jimmy Carter Forum on US–China Relations at the Carter Center in Atlanta; a lecture-recital on American pedagogical piano music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna; a performance of Peace for clarinet and piano by Jessie Montgomery at the Virginia Arts Festival; and chamber music appearances in the Masters in the Chapel concert series in Venice, CA, and the Henry J. Bruman Summer Chamber Music Festival at UCLA. Deak’s work as a performer is closely connected to his research on piano pedagogy, interpretation, and cultural memory. His article “Pianistic Memorization as Cultural Memory: Insights from Religious and Devotional Traditions” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Piano Research, and his essay “The Seventh Book: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Piano Study” appeared in the EPTA Piano Journal. In 2026, he will undertake a Crédit Agricole d’Île-de-France Research Fellowship at the Bibliothèque musicale La Grange-Fleuret in Paris for his project “Revivre le cours: Alfred Cortot, archives pédagogiques et transmission interprétative sur le Steinway 1907.” Deak received the Hopkinson Silver Medal at the Chappell Medal Piano Competition in London and worked intensively with Maria João Pires in Paris and Brussels. A graduate of the École Normale de Musique de Paris and the Royal College of Music in London, he received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from the University of Southern California. He currently serves as Assistant Professor of Piano and Musicology and Director of Keyboard Studies at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. About The Henry J.
