Bruman Summer Chamber Music Festival is being held this summer in Lani Hall, a 133-seat auditorium located in the Schoenberg Music Building on the UCLA campus. All concerts are free of charge, and no reservations are required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please subscribe to our channel to be notified when the concerts go live. 2×3: From Duo to Sextet Ambroise Aubrun, violin Rebecca Hang, violin Ariana Solotoff, viola Kevin Hsu, viola Brent Samuel, cello Brian Schuldt, cello Ambroise Aubrun Hailed as a “marvelous violinist” (France Musique) with “sensitive tone” (Pizzicato Magazine) and “tremendous ease, suppleness, and beauty of sound” (Nice-Matin) , violinist Ambroise Aubrun enjoys a career as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician. He has performed extensively on three continents and has conducted master classes in North America (Québec, California, Oregon, New York, Wisconsin, Nevada, Utah, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico) , France, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand. His albums for Editions Hortus and Navona Records have embraced a wide range of repertoire from J. S. Bach to Eric Tanguy (b. 1968) , and received praise of the highest caliber (five stars in Pizzicato Magazine, “coup de coeur” by France Musique, and a nomination for the 2021 International Classical Music Awards) . His performances and albums have been broadcast on CBS, ABC, WFMT Chicago, France Musique, 3MBS Melbourne (Australia) , Klara Radio (Belgium) , KPFK Los Angeles, KNCJ Nevada, WTUL New-Orleans, and KUSC Los Angeles. He has served as guest concertmaster of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico, and is a regular guest of the Los Angeles Philharmonic violin sections. Aubrun graduated at age nineteen from the Paris National Superior Conservatory, and then studied at UCLA (DMA) and at the Colburn Conservatory of Music (Artist Diploma) . He is a winner of the Charles Oulmont Prize of the Fondation de France, a laureate of the Langart Foundation in Switzerland, and a recipient of the UNLV Barrick Scholar Award for outstanding achievement in Creative Activities and a CSUN Faculty Achievement Award. Currently Associate Professor of Violin at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Dr. Aubrun previously taught at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and UC Santa Barbara. He is the artistic director of the Henry J. Bruman Summer Chamber Music Festival at UCLA. Dr. Aubrun plays a Matteo Goffriller violin, on generous loan from the Langart Foundation. More information at www.ambroiseaubrun.com. Rebecca Hang Rebecca Hang was born in Germany and began her violin studies at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz with Helga Wähdel. From 1987 until 1990 she lived in Israel where she studied with the concertmaster of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Chaim Taub. Rebecca continued her musical education with Atar Arad and Paul Biss at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she received her Bachelor of Music “with high distinction” and a Master of Music in violin performance. As a member of the internationally renowned Felici String Quartet, she won first prize in the 1992 Michael Kuttner Competition at IU, the MTNA Competition in Indianapolis, the Russell Award of the 1993 Coleman Competition, and was a prize winner of the International String Quartet Competition in Osaka, Japan, in the same year. In June of 1993 Rebecca gave her New York solo debut in Lincoln Center’s Juilliard Theater performing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante. As a member of the first violin section of the International “Guido Cantelli” Chamber Orchestra in Milan, Italy, she toured throughout Europe and the US before accepting the NEA Rural Residency Grant with the Felici Piano Trio in Mammoth Lakes, CA, in 1998. Rebecca dedicates much of her time to Chamber Music Unbound (CMU) ’s Community Music School. Through her pedagogical work she hopes to nurture children’s innate musicality and lay the foundations for a lasting love of great music. Ariana Solotoff Ariana Solotoff, originally from New York, lives and works in Los Angeles as a performer and teacher of violin and viola. Ms. Solotoff earned her bachelor’s degree from The Juilliard School under the mentorship of Michael Tree and Masao Kawasaki, and her master’s degree from the Haute École de Musique de Genève in Switzerland, under Miguel Da Silva, where she was a recipient of the prestigious Hans Wilsdorf Foundation Award. Ariana has performed with many chamber and symphonic orchestras across the US and Europe, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Venia, Hulencourt Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Regală, and Orchestra Națională Radio România. She has appeared on the Grammy Awards, the Video Game Music Awards, and Disney Channel, and has recorded for film soundtracks and albums by artists such as Beyoncé. As an educator, Ariana teaches privately violin, viola, and piano, and is on faculty at Junior Chamber Music. She has previously served on faculty at the Montecito International Music Festival, the Idyllwild Arts Academy Intensive Summer Music Program, and Cremona International Music Academy in Italy. Ariana is also the creator and director of Popsical Music, an initiative dedicated to making classical music accessible and inspiring for children and families. Kevin Hsu Kevin Hsu is a violist hailing from Saratoga, California. Mr. Hsu has performed throughout the continents with orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Diego Symphony, and The Orchestra San Antonio. He has also performed and collaborated with musicians such as Midori Goto, Alfred Brendel, Augustin Dumay, members of the Artemis Quartet, Glenn Dicterow, Donald Weilerstein, and many more. Mr. Hsu regularly gives concerts throughout the United States in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, and San Antonio. His primary teachers include Martha Katz, Michael Tree, and Brian Chen. Mr. Hsu is also an advocate for new music and has recorded and performed many works for viola and chamber ensembles. In addition to his viola performances and activities, Mr. Hsu is also a professional photographer and videographer. Brent Samuel Cellist Brent Samuel joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1999 and frequently performs with the orchestra’s Chamber Music Society and in its Green Umbrella contemporary music series. A second-generation native of Los Angeles, Samuel earned his Bachelor of Music at the University of Southern California and completed his Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School with Joel Krosnick of the Juilliard String Quartet. He made his New York debut performing Hindemith’s 1940 Cello Concerto with the Juilliard Orchestra. While in New York he performed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Group for Contemporary Music, and the International Sejong Soloists. He has collaborated on stage with such artists as Midori, Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, Christopher Parkening, and members of the Guarneri and Juilliard String Quartets. Samuel has participated in the Aspen, La Jolla, Marlboro, Santa Fe, and Tanglewood Music Festivals. He has been on the faculty of Pepperdine University and the American Festival for the Arts in Houston, Texas. Brian Schuldt As a founding member of the Felici Piano Trio, Brian Schuldt has performed hundreds of critically acclaimed concerts in the U. S., Europe, and South America. His chamber music collaborations include renowned artists such as Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Edward Auer, Atar Arad, Corey Cerovsek, Hagai Shaham, and Eli Eban. Brian was the cellist of the Arcadia String Quartet, which won the grand prize of the 1995 Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition and the Indiana University Kuttner Quartet Scholarship. He has appeared as soloist with the Oak Ridge Symphony, Auburn Symphony, Owensboro Symphony, Eastern Sierra Symphony, and the Chamber Orchestra “Cantelli” of Milan, Italy. He has served as guest principal cellist for the Fresno Philharmonic, Reno Chamber Orchestra, and Owensboro Symphony and has been a guest performer/instructor at Indiana University, UNLV, Cal State Fresno, University of Tennessee, and Tennessee Tech. Brian studied with Toby Saks at the University of Washington and continued under Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi and Janos Starker at Indiana University, where he earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees. From 1994 to 1996, he held the appointment of Assistant Instructor of Cello at Indiana University. He is currently Executive Director of Chamber Music Unbound and conductor of the Eastern Sierra Chamber Orchestra. Brian plays a cello by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. About The Henry J. Bruman Summer Chamber Music Festival Ambroise Aubrun, D. M. A., Artistic Director The festival was founded in 1988 by Professor Henry J. Bruman (1913–2005) , who sought to introduce new audiences to chamber music at informal concerts on the UCLA campus. The festival is made possible by the Henry J. Bruman Trust, Professors Wendell E.
