The Chester County FoodBank and West Chester Public Library are partnering for Eat Fresh. Eat Fresh allows participants to gain positive attitudes toward a variety of nutritious foods including fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Eat Fresh is an 18-class series offered in English and Spanish that emphasize whole foods, local produce, and cultural traditions. Participants receive a 10 to 15 pound CSA style box of fresh produce with each class to put their newly learned skills into action at home. With these skills and the opportunity to taste new fresh fruits and vegetables, participants will be able to make informed choices to select ingredients and prepare healthy meals at home. The program recruitsfood insecure participants with diet-related health concerns. What makes Eat Fresh unique when compared to similar nutrition education programs is the high-quality produce and the emphasis on culture and community. During PA growing season, our produce shares are all PA grown with 60% grown by on-staff farmers andvolunteersat one of our Food Bankfarm sites. Ourfarmandeducationprogram staff collaborate to grow culturally relevant foods as many of our students have immigrated from other countries. Eat Fresh instructors encourage students to pair their cultural traditions and family recipes with food native to this area. Sharing culture and food with one another creates a collaborative environment for students to make life-long friends and feel supported in making healthy lifestyle changes. Eat Fresh Enables Participants to: Improve healthy cooking skills and confidence Increase fruit and vegetable intake Promote community connection and social engagement Classes support long-term healthy lifestyle changes by incorporating culturally adaptive programming and recipes selected on the unique food traditions of each class.
