Johanna Samuels "Sorry Kid" Record Release Show
8/15/2026 at Zebulon
Sometimes an album title arrives like a voice from across time. For Johanna Samuels, Sorry, Kid felt like a message to her younger self. Part apology, but also an acknowledgment that maturity means recognizing what you couldn't see at the time. Out this August with Odd Man Out Records, the album ends a chapter that began nearly two decades ago, gathering songs from as early as 2007 alongside newer work shaped by hard-earned clarity. Reflecting on the finished record, Samuels says, “I think about how much has changed since I wrote these songs, and I know that releasing them will finally close the stitch on a chapter of my life that taught me so much.”
The road to finishing Sorry, Kid was anything but linear. After scrapping an initial version of the record eight songs in, she considered walking away entirely. Then at a New Year's Eve singalong at the home of producer Jonathan Rado and his wife Jackie, a path forward appeared. Between piano renditions of Ben Kweller tunes, the idea of recording together surfaced organically. Samuels already had the songs. Rado (Weyes Blood, The Killers, Father John Misty) had the right instincts to build a world around them. “It felt kind of cosmic that I already had so much material in my back pocket,” Samuels recalls. “Rado and I share a very similar musical palette, and because we were already pals, it felt easy and natural.”
