International Day of Forests
Celebrated each year on 21 March. In 2026, the day focuses on the theme “Forests and economies”, highlighting the many ways forests support prosperity and wellbeing around the world. Forests do far more than provide wood, food and jobs — they also help sustain farming, protect clean water supplies, boost agricultural productivity and support strong, resilient communities and wellbeing. By caring for forests, we are also investing in healthier economies and a more sustainable future.
The International Day of Forests is organised by the United Nations, led by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and has been officially observed since 2012. Building on earlier forest awareness initiatives, the day brings people together globally to recognise the value of forests in everyday life. Each year highlights a different theme, helping to deepen understanding of how forests connect environmental health with social and economic wellbeing.
There are many simple and enjoyable ways to mark World Forest Day. You might take part in a local event, plant or care for trees, learn about how forests support food and water systems, or spend time outdoors appreciating the natural spaces around you. Whether celebrated through learning, action or quiet reflection, World Forest Day 2026 is an inviting opportunity to recognise the vital role forests play — not just for nature, but for livelihoods, communities and economies worldwide.
