PART 1: How does the place we come from shape who we are? What happens when the community we grew up in begins to change? And how do different ways of living in Israel shape identity, family, belonging, and freedom?
Join us for a new Double Take Israel series exploring belonging in Israeli society through two iconic Israeli films and meaningful conversations before each screening.
Our first screening will feature “Operation Grandma” (97 minutes), a hilarious Israeli cult classic following three very different brothers racing against time to fulfill their grandmother’s last wish - to be buried in the kibbutz cemetery. Chaos, military culture, family dynamics, absurd bureaucracy, and classic Israeli improvisation collide in one unforgettable story.
Before the film, we’ll explore:
-The kibbutz as the great Israeli dream
-What happened to kibbutzim after the 1990s
-How those changes shaped the children who grew up there
-Why this film became such an iconic reflection of Israeli culture

PART 2: How does the place we come from shape who we are? What happens when we leave home in search of freedom, identity, and belonging? And how do mixed cities in Israel become spaces of both opportunity and tension?
Join us for the second event in our Double Take Israel series exploring belonging and identity in Israeli society through film and conversation. Need not have attended the first screening to enjoy this film discussion.
This screening will feature “In Between” (Drama, 103 minutes), an award-winning Israeli-Palestinian film following three young Palestinian women sharing an apartment in Tel Aviv while trying to balance independence, friendship, tradition, and modern life. Between nightlife, careers, family expectations, and cultural pressures, each woman struggles to define who she wants to be in a society full of contradictions.
