**Sweet Stuff: New England's Confectionery History**
Discover the rich tradition of sweets in New England, which began in the late 1700s with a chocolate mill opening outside Boston. Over centuries, the region has cultivated a remarkable array of confections, from baked goods to sugared treats. Author Susan Mara Bregman, returning from her third year as a judge at the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival, will delve into this sugary heritage through her latest book, *New England Sweets: Doughnuts, Bonbons, and Whoopie Pies*. She will explore beloved Maine delicacies such as Needhams, Bangor Taffy, and, of course, whoopie pies. After a successful career in transportation research and policy, Susan has focused on writing and photography centered around New England nostalgia. She has authored five books for Arcadia Publishing, including titles like *New England Neon* and *New England Candlepin Bowling*, with her latest work, *Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market*, released in June. An alumna of Brown University and the Harvard Kennedy School, Susan resides in Boston and enjoys roadside attractions, plastic lawn flamingos, mahjong, and New England’s classic sweets.
