Details:
In the early 1970's peregrine falcons were placed on the endangered species list and there were no known nesting sites East of the Mississippi. Join Master Falconer and Raptor Educator Michael Kuriga for a program that explains how Peregrines were almost wiped out to extinction and brought back due to the efforts of several organizations, one being the Lycoming County Audubon Society. Michael will have on hand a live Peregrine falcon and will explain some of the physiology makeup of this magnificent raptor. He will discuss the effects that man had on the destruction of this and many other species due to the effects of pesticides. For over forty years Michel has been training and hunting with a variety of raptors. He has traveled the world and lectured to thousands of people.
He will go on to explain how this particular bird finally was delisted to Protected and taken off the Endangered Species list. Throughout the talk, Michael will add some of his first hand experiences with the Peregrine and many other raptor species. There will be time for questions and photos will be allowed to be taken with the falcon!
This program is for tweens, teens and adults.
Michel suggests the following reading before or after the event, to help you gain more insight about the topics he will discuss: My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George, H is for Hawk by Helen MacDonald, and Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.
