Details:
Lace up your hiking shoes and experience the natural beauty of Westcave Preserve! The library is offering a limited number of passes for this special guided hike through one of the Hill Country’s most stunning natural areas.
All participants must be registered, including adults and children, as Westcave has strict limits on the number of visitors per hike. Space is limited and passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
During your grotto hike, a guide will lead you on a 15-minute walk from the waiting area through an arid savanna and a limestone crevice, descending a 100-foot staircase into a sheltered canyon filled with lush plant life. At the head of the canyon, visitors will see water cascading down a beautiful 40-foot cliff that replenishes the grotto pool below, along with a small one-chamber cave.
The experience is a 1-mile roundtrip hike from the parking lot and is considered moderate to difficult. Visitors enter and exit the canyon using a long, winding staircase with approximately 125 uneven steps, along with additional steps, rocks, and roots along the trail. We strongly encourage guests to wear sturdy shoes and bring a walking stick if helpful.
For those who prefer not to navigate the staircase, guests are welcome to enjoy the uplands area, which includes an ADA-friendly trail, bird blinds, and a butterfly garden.
Please review all guidelines carefully before registering to ensure your group is prepared for the hike.
