Details:
PLACES I GO FROM MY BED is an original work of object theater conceived for young audience members with illnesses and disabilities, but enjoyable to all. Devised and performed by Katherine McGerr and Erica Murphy and designed by Carmen Martinez, PLACES I GO FROM MY BED transforms objects from a child’s hospital room into a fantastic and immersive adventure. A frightened child enters the operating room, draped in an oversized gown and fuzzy hospital socks, only to discover that her anesthesia mask has become snorkeling gear for a deep-sea adventure! As sea, land and skyscapes unfold via shadow puppetry (all created from ordinary objects in a hospital stay) the child meets strange and wonderful creatures who show her her own power to travel via imagination from her recovery bed. Developed with the support of Syracuse University and the State University of New York Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, the 30-minute performance adapts to fill the space around a child on their terms and ends with 10 minutes of optional, hands-on shadow exploration. Carmen Martinez, Katie McGerr and Erica Murphy are theater-makers and educators with extensive experience in performance and community-engaged work for erse audiences. Martinez is a multidisciplinary designer whose work ranges from murals at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Katy Perry concerts to New York and regional theater productions. McGerr has developed theater for young audiences for the Chautauqua Institution, Syracuse Stage and the New York Pops Up! Festival; her directing and associate-directing has been seen on Broadway and internationally. Murphy trained at the Jacques Lecoq International School of Theater in Paris, has performed in world premieres across the U. S., Canada, and Europe and created award-winning original productions. All three serve on the faculty at Syracuse University.
