Details:
What does it mean to make an object that carries identity, memory, or protection? In this special two-part ceramics workshop, you'll explore that question through your own hands.
Led by artist Sofia Vidal, Figures of Meaning draws inspiration from the ancient Cuchimilcos — ceramic figures from Peru's Chancay culture, traditionally associated with guardianship and spiritual presence. Rather than replicating these historical forms, participants are invited to engage thoughtfully with their meaning and create figurative sculptures rooted in their own personal and cultural narratives.
Day 1 – Saturday, July 11 | 1:00–3:30 PM
Boca Raton Museum of Art | 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, FL 33432
Begin with a gallery tour of Ancient American works from the Museum's collection, followed by a presentation on the Cuchimilcos and their cultural context. Then head into the studio to hand-build your own figurative sculpture inspired by themes of protection, memory, and identity.
Day 2 – Saturday, July 18 | 1:00–3:30 PM
Boca Raton Museum of Art School | 801 W. Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, FL 33486
Return to the Art School to finish your sculpture with surface techniques, oxides, and other treatments that add depth and character to your work.
All materials provided. No prior experience necessary.
Members: $120
Non-Members: $160
