Join us at the Central Library for multiple engaging art exhibitions that cater to all ages.
Explore "A Photobook Gallery: The Ensley Childhood Project" in the First Floor Gallery, showcasing a non-linear timeline of the historic Ensley neighborhood through homemade family photos, archived videos, and written narratives. This exhibition offers insights into the history and culture of the Ensley community and the Black childhood experience. Meet the project's curator, Timothy Quarshie, during a special reception on Friday, May 15, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Fourth Floor Gallery. This project is supported by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
In the Sculpture Gallery on the same floor, experience "Among the Pines," a captivating solo exhibition by Kathy Nelson, featuring unique baskets and coiled art crafted from longleaf pine needles. As a juried artist with the Alabama Craft Guild since 2015, Nelson highlights the beauty of this endangered Southern pine species. This display is also made possible with support from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
Additionally, don't miss Natalie Harrison's exhibition "Fragments," displayed in the Fourth Floor Gallery, featuring her richly hued, textured paintings inspired by the intricate designs of jewelry and fabric. A reception for Harrison will also take place on May 15 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., with her work having been featured in various solo and group exhibitions nationwide.
These events provide a wonderful opportunity for families, seniors, and art enthusiasts to appreciate diverse artistic expressions and the stories behind them. For any inquiries, please contact Margaret Splane at the Central Library.
