The R.W. Norton Art Gallery, established in 1966, is Shreveport's largest museum, housing an extensive collection of American and European art spanning over four millennia. Founded by the R.W. Norton Art Foundation in honor of Richard W. Norton, Sr., a discoverer of the Rodessa Oil Field, the gallery's initial collection was based on the Nortons' personal acquisitions. The museum features renowned works from artists such as Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, Mary Cassatt, and Auguste Rodin, alongside pieces from the Hudson River School and ancient civilizations. Beyond its art collection, the Norton Art Gallery boasts 40 acres of landscaped botanical gardens, making it a significant cultural landmark that promotes visual arts and public appreciation through educational programs, special exhibitions, and community events. Admission to the gallery and its gardens is free for all visitors.
