The Guardian Born in 1882, Virginia Woolf is recognized as a major 20th-century author, a great novelist and essayist and a key figure in literary history. With her sister, the painter Vanessa Bell, she was drawn into the company of writers and artists later known as the Bloomsbury Group. Woolf struggled with mental illness all of her life and in 1941, fearing another attack, she drowned herself.
