Red, White, and Blue Weekend: Dyeing with Cochineal

Join us this 4th of July Weekend for an extraordinary time discovering natural dyes of 200 years ago! We know these colors well: Red, White, and Blue. They are a part of our national American flag as well as the Texas flag. But how would those colors be achieved when these flags were first made? Come out on Friday, July 3rd to learn all about cochineal: the long-standard dye used to achieve deep reds for millennia! Learn where cochineal comes from and how it is used to achieve shades of red and pink for various textiles. This program will run from 10am to 3pm, with dyed materials staying on display until 4pm. We hope to see you there! This event is presented as part of Texas America250, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
