The Savannah History Museum offers a journey through the city's past, from its founding in 1733 to the present day. Housed in the historic former Central of Georgia Railway passenger depot, a National Historic Landmark, the museum features over 10,000 artifacts. Exhibits cover various eras, including Native American history, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and modern Savannah. Visitors can see items like an 1890 steam locomotive, an antique cotton gin, Johnny Mercer's Oscar Award, and the bench from the movie 'Forrest Gump'. The museum also hosts educational programs and events, such as historical reenactments and lectures, and is operated by the Coastal Heritage Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving historical landmarks and providing educational experiences.
