Erie MetroParks, established in 1968 as the Erie County Metropolitan Park District and renamed in 1991, is dedicated to the preservation, conservation, protection, and enhancement of Erie County's natural and historical resources. Its mission is to conserve natural resources while connecting the community with nature through education and exploration. The park district manages 14 parks and preserves, totaling approximately 3,200 acres, with a focus on maintaining natural states while allowing for active recreation with minimal environmental impact. Erie MetroParks offers over 30 miles of trails and provides more than 300 free educational programs annually for all ages. Osborn MetroPark serves as the flagship park and headquarters, housing the Roger Johnson Nature Center, which features educational classrooms and wildlife viewing areas. The organization is overseen by a Board of Park Commissioners and operates under the provisions of the Ohio Revised Code, Section 1545.
