Overview:
Join us for a two part series on Safeguarding Our Streams: Balancing Mining and Water Quality- an interactive program exploring how historical mining impacts our local water systems. The first part of the series will be with renowned geochemist Dr. Devin Castendyk as he reveals how abandoned mines leak heavy metals into surrounding streams, showcasing his pioneering use of drones and AI to track this pollution. For the second part of the series, attendees can experience a live, hands-on demonstration featuring advanced water-sampling technology and mineral contamination testing. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, a student, or a concerned citizen, you will leave with a clear understanding of watershed health and actionable steps to protect our backyard waterways.
*We HIGHLY recommend that you attend the presentation from Devin on Thursday, August 6 in order to get the most out of our field trip to the mines on Saturday, August 8. You will benefit more from attending both but this is not required.*
