The Smithtown Library in Smithtown, Long Island, NY, has a rich history dating back to 1907 when books were first stored in Judge Lawrence Smith's law office. Its first permanent building opened in 1912, moving to its current location in 1950. In 1952, it became Suffolk County's only municipal library. Over the years, it expanded with significant additions in 1953, 1968, and 2012. Following a historic referendum in 2001, the library became independent, establishing a seven-member volunteer Board of Trustees in 2002. It is now the largest library system on Long Island.
