FAMOUS FILM DIRECTORS IN THE SPOTLIGHT!
During the month of April, Classic Movie Night continues its 8-film series of classics “Directed by…”, saluting two more powerful directors from the Golden Age of Hollywood. On Wednesday, April 9 we will showcase a 1960 Oscar®-winning comedy from the iconic Billy Wilder, known for his intensely dramatic masterpieces, “Double Indemnity,” “The Lost Weekend,” and (my all-time favorite film), “Sunset Blvd.,” as well as hilarious comedy romps, “The Seven- Year Itch,” and “Some Like it Hot,” both starring the fabulous Marilyn Monroe in two of her most successful film outings. Our first feature nabbed the famed director three out of 10 Oscar® nominations for the film, including Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture of 1961. The film follows an insurance clerk (Jack Lemmon) who, in hopes of climbing the corporate ladder, allows his superiors to use his Upper West Side apartment to conduct their extramarital affairs. He becomes attracted to an elevator operator (Shirley MacLaine) in his office building, unaware that she is having an affair with the head of personnel and Lemon’s boss, (Fred MacMurray)…in, you guessed it, Lemmon’s apartment. As one can imagine, this complex situation does not turn out as our hero would have anticipated. The bittersweet romantic comedy is sure to tug on our movie lovers’ heartstrings, as it has for so many years.
