“WESTERNS…WITH A TWIST” BEGINS WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27.
Howdy, Partners! Come join us for Classic Movie Night’s latest film entertainment premiering Wednesday, August 27 at the Historic USO Building. “Westerns…with a Twist” is not your usual cowboy/cowgirl film outing. There’s something a little unusual going on here! On Wednesday, August 27 at 7:15, Jimmy Stewart, in his famous “aw, shucks!” persona, plays an accidental sheriff who dislikes guns, while Marlene Dietrich looks him up and down, admires what she sees, and sings about “what the boys in the back room will have.”
George Marshall directed this energetic 1939 Universal Pictures’ box office hit that also offers Brian Donlevy as Kent, the unscrupulous boss of Bottleneck who has the current sheriff killed when he asks one too many questions about a rigged poker game that gives Kent a stranglehold over the local cattle rangers. The mayor, who is in cahoots with Kent, appoints the town drunk, Washington Dimsdale, (Charles Winnenger) as the new sheriff, assuming that he'll be easy to control. But what the mayor doesn't know is that Dimsdale was a deputy under famous lawman, Tom Destry, and is able to call upon the equally formidable Tom Destry Jr to be his deputy. Featuring a career reviving performance from Marlene Dietrich as bar singer Frenchie, who engages in one of the most memorable ladies’ screen fight (with Una Merkel) that has ever been filmed! The cast includes: Mischa Auer, Irene Hervey, Allen Jenkins and Jack Carson. Not too difficult to figure out the film’s title, but you can find out by checking our Event Board located at the front door, or pick up a current film flyer during Bookstore hours: Wednesday through Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm.
Our Snack Bar and Bookstore open at 6:15 with Classic Cartoons screening until 7:15 movie time. As always, admission is donation, only.
