Namaskar by Sameer Gupta

Doors 7:30pm Show 8pm Join us on Friday, July 10 for a special presentation of Namaskar by Sameer Gupta. Namaskar is the brainchild of tabla and drumset hybrid percussiobist Sameer Gupta . Gupta is a virtuoso percussionist who musically embodies the integrative spirit of our time. An original musical voice in jazz, world, and fusion music since 2005, Sameer Gupta is known as one of the few percussionists representing the improvisational traditions of Black American Music through a lens of Raga music. This performance by Sameer Gupta Namaskar has several key members that represent the rich traditions of global music, Suhail Yusuf Khan (sarangi) , Siddique Ahmed (rubab) , Marcus Stephens (saxophone, raga samples, effects) , Prasant Radhakrishnan (Carnatic saxophone) , Javier Navarette (percussion) , and Kai Eckhardt (bass) . special guest kathak dancer Labonee Mohanta will be featured throughout the night. The music is a unique approach to Indian / jazz fusion with many of the compositions taken from Golden-Era Bollywood, old folk songs, and traditional ragas. The approach Gupta and crew take to the music does not in any way produce the kind of results one would expect. This music is greater than the sum of its parts, while it ventures into fresh improvisational directions with Gupta’s kit drumming injecting a jazz flavor and sensibility into everything along the way.
