Join instructor Lisa Cohen in exploring the practice of Chair Yoga.
Chair yoga is based on traditional Hatha Yoga that dates back over 5,000 years. During Chair Yoga, yoga postures are modified as sitting yoga poses or yoga stretches using a chair. This makes chair yoga suitable and enjoyable for individuals at all levels of fitness. There may or may not also be some standing postures, using the chair for support as needed.
Yoga provides many benefits, such as increased circulation, feelings of well-being, and decreases in blood pressure, anxiety, inflammation, and chronic pain. Improved sense of balance as well as strength are additional benefits that can be realized through the regular practice of Yoga. Yoga does not need to be vigorous to achieve these benefits!
Mindfulness is also an inherent part of yoga. Focusing on movement, breathing, and noticing how the body is reacting creates a moving meditation that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and improves mental clarity. Creating a safe and peaceful space to minimize distractions and become more aware of the workings of the mind helps us to learn about ourselves on a deeper level than when we are engaged in the busy-ness of life.
This is a gentle practice. Please wear comfortable clothes for ease of movement. We suggest considering dressing in layers or bringing a small blanket so that you may adjust your level of comfort based on the room temperature, and a water bottle if desired.
