Details:
Nestled in a mountainous basin in a remote, rugged corner of Jordan lies the magnificent ruins of the ancient city of Petra, recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Petra is famed for its over 800 tombs and monuments, literally carved out of the sandstone mountains, including a Roman theater capable of seating perhaps8,500 people. Petra thrived for centuries as a major trading hub of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean. Repeatedly damaged by earthquakes between 350 CE and 750 CE, Petra eventually was abandoned and not rediscovered until 1812. Dr. Phillips participated in the excavation of The Temple of the Winged Lions at Petra. Based on that excavation work, living at the site for three monthsand traveling the region, this lecture takes you behind the scenes on an actual dig and on a virtual tour of Jordan with its 2,000-year-old Rose Red City Half as Old as Time. Is archaeology anything like the scenes depicted in Indiana Jones? Join us today online or in-person and find out!
