Details:
Join us for "Southern Road to Freedom: A History of Florida's Underground Railroad," a compelling presentation that explores Florida's unique role as the nation's first Underground Railroad, established in the late 17th century. This historical account highlights how Spanish Florida became a sanctuary for runaway slaves from the American South, predating the more widely known Northern Underground Railroad. The presentation will cover the escape routes utilized by enslaved Africans, the black communities they formed, and the significant events leading up to the abolition of slavery in the United States.
The session will be led by Magdalena Lamarre, a retired Full Professor of History and Sociology from Miami-Dade College, who brings extensive expertise in Florida’s history, culture, diversity, and social justice.
